L.A. Works Makes it Easy to Volunteer in Los Angeles

Los Angeles Area Contestants

Yolanda Rosales says-

It starts as a noun: Volunteer

A person who performs or offers to perform a service voluntarily: that is what I have done since I was a child. At first it started with reading to a neighbor who was blind, then it was helping my grandmother prepare the church with flowers for Mass on Sundays. It continued through high school, taking patients to Mass on Sundays at County General Hospital.

When I married it took a different path, as I watched my children grow, I volunteered at their schools. I assisted the teachers with tutoring, catechism and varied tasks to help them help their respective classes. Room Aid, class driver, field trips, etc.

To perform or offer to perform a service of one's own free will. It has always been my goal to help in whatever way would or could enable someone to feel better. While I was working,it became mentoring high school children and getting out to schools and giving educational training lectures on rail safety. I volunteered to lead our rail opening projects, home shows, public transporation events, etc.

I joined LA Works and through them became involved in numerous projects, the Mayor's Day of Service which enabled me to submit my local grammar school for interior painting of the entire school. Artivist which exposed me to the global mission of raising awareness and promoting positive change. I worked as a volunteer for the City of Los Angeles 225th Birthday Celebration. I staffed a information booth. Voter Registration has also been on my list of things that I have done. I presently sit on a board called "Parents in Crisis" affiliated with the juvenile hall, as a volunteer.

So as you can see I have always extened myself,as part of sharing with my community and showing my children and grandchildren, that if I can do it, then so can you.
