doingsomething Joins L.A. Works

The veteran volunteer organization doingsomething has decided to retire, but is helping its members transition into becoming members of L.A. Works so they can continue their volunteer service in Los Angeles.

doingsomething leaders Lynne, Lori, and Barbara recently visited the L.A. Works office to gather materials for its membership. Welcome letters were sent out to all doingsomething volunteers, and a special orientation has been scheduled for Feburary 5 to welcome them to L.A. Works. This orientation is also open to any L.A. Works members interested in finding our more about us.

L.A. Works welcomes all doingsomething volunteers, and will do our best to make you feel at home by maintaining programming with many of your regular community service partners, and providing you with the full spectrum of L.A. Works programming.

Welcome New L.A. Works Intern
Kelly Rios

L.A. Works is happy to announce it has found its new fundraising intern. Her name is Kelly Rios.

Kelly recently moved to Los Angeles from Sacramento in order to attend school. She started volunteering with L.A. Works as a way to meet new people and become more familiar with the city. She gravitated towards projects involving children but wanted to get more involved with the organization.

As a result, she's now serving as an Intern 3 days a week where she'll be working with Senior Director of Marketing and Corporate Outreach, Anthony Rubenstein on fundraising for L.A. Works Day 2005 and setting up locations for the new L.A. Works Street Team. Want to be part of the street team or get more info, click here to email Kelly.

Attention Teachers:
New Service-Learning Resources

Give Where You Live is a national campaign connecting teachers and students to meaningful service-learning opportunities in their communities. Sponsored by USA Network in partnership with Hands on Network (formerly CityCares), the initiative provides free instructional resources to teachers and students.

The Give Where You Live Curriculum Package promotes community-level activity by sponsoring a recognition program through which students receive certificates in exchange for submitting reflective essays on their service learning experiences. To support participating teachers, USA Network is also offering an online forum where teachers can discuss and reflect on service learning through blogs.

The package will guide teachers and students through all aspects of a service-learning project, including:

  • Community needs assessment;
  • Forming partnerships through Hands On Network affiliates;
  • Acquiring funding;
  • Organiziong reflection opportunities
  • Evaluating the success of the classroom project;
  • Promoting and celebrating the completion of the project.
