Be The Change!
A new book that tells the story of L.A. Works is a great holiday gift!

Dear Friend of L.A. Works:
Finally, there is a book that captures the mission of L.A. Works in its pages and ignites the spirit of volunteerism in all of us. We are pleased to announce the publication of Be The Change!   Written by hundreds of volunteers just like you showcasing the incredible work you do everyday in our community.  Take a look and you just might find a L.A. Works volunteer in the book!

Be The Change! is filled with poignant and inspiring stories of everyday citizens, celebrities, and high-profile leaders – people who have made a powerful difference in their communities around the world.  Just like you, contributors to the book tutored children in Georgia, built homes for Habitat for Humanity in Texas, collected coats for the homeless in New York, worked with refugee immigrants in Virginia, rebuilt homes ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi, cared for the aged in California, and started HIV/AIDS education centers in Zimbabwe, among other great deeds.

Be The Change! is a wonderful gift, with a powerful foreword from Tom Brokaw and photographs from Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist, David Hume Kennerly. (Pictured at right, L.A. Works projects at Gramercy Place Shelter, AIDSProject LA, & Midnight Mission)

A portion of all proceeds from the sale of the book go to support Hands On Network and our work together.

Hands On Schools Martin Luther King Jr. Day Service Project

L.A. Works is proud to announce we will be producing a Hands On Schools Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day Service Project. 2007 will mark our inaugural MLK Day of Service and will become the first official day of service in our calendar.

We will engage 250 youth, community and corporate volunteers as well as 100 youth and adult volunteer leaders in a day of activism and reflection that will revitalize and renovate a middle school located in Compton on January 15, 2007.

Our MLK Service Day will have three components:

School Transformation: Volunteers will create and paint three social justice themed murals inspired by Dr. King’s teachings, paint classrooms and school buildings, plant flowers and shrubs, and clean up the campus.

The Legacy of Dr. King: A Facilitated Workshop for students on Dr. King’s legacy and teachings that will include personal testimonies from civil rights leaders and Tuskegee airmen.

Freedom March: Students, parents and volunteers will participate in a simulated freedom march throughout the campus and surrounding neighborhood. Students will also make  banners and placards for the march. In the weeks following, students will put together a display of photographs, banners and placards commemorating the march and the Day of Service.

Watch the L.A. Works website in the coming weeks for more information on this exciting event to learn how you or your company can become involved.
