KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV Sponsor
L.A. Works Day 2005
L.A. Works is proud to announce that KCBS-TV (channel 2) and sister station KCAL-TV (channel 9) have become sponsors of L.A. Works Day 2005. Keep an eye out for Public Service Ads beginning in April on both stations, and a half-hour program on KCBS' "Studio 2" before "60 Minutes" one Sunday in May (schedules permitting) which will focus on L.A. Works and community service in Los Angeles. Some volunteers may even be asked to appear on TV.
On L.A. Works Day 2005 KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV on-air talent will be on hand to volunteer and to lend a hand hosting the big afternoon party and concert at California Plaza.
KCBS-TV has been a long-term supporter of L.A. Works, and we are happy to continue this important relationship, and thank both KCAL-TV and KCBS-TV for their renewed support.
If you or your company want to show your support for community service in Los Angeles, it's not too late to join KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV and the growing list of L.A. Works Day 2005 sponsors. Get information on sponsorship by clicking here.

Celebrate Earth Day
and Prepare for L.A. Works Day
On Saturday April 23rd L.A. Works will hold a special Earth Day environmental clean-up event at Hollenbeck Middle School in Boyle Heights.
Hollenbeck is one L.A.'s oldest active school campuses, and due to it's hilltop site, is a focal point for the surrounding community. Unfortunately, due to severe budget cuts, the extensive gardens and landscaping surrounding the school has fallen into disarray, affecting the entire neighborhood.
On Earth Day L.A. Works volunteers will begin the very big job of getting Hollenbeck's landscaping into shape by weeding, pruning and turning the soil. Then, on L.A. Works Day 2005, we will return to the campus to finish the job under the supervision of experts from the UCLA Landscape Architecture Program. This day will also serve as a training day for L.A. Works Day Project Leaders and Task Captains.

Become Part of a New
Book on Volunteerism!
L.A. Works wants to invite you to be part of a new and exciting project that Hands On Network is organizing this year. As many of you know, Hands On Network is the national organization that L.A. Works is affiliated with, along with 41 other organizations around the country and increasingly, around the world.
We have been asked to solicit your help and your stories to be included in a new book called, Be The Change: Improving the World and You, due out late this year. A core part of the book will be based on interviews with both “celebrities” committed to service as well as “everyday” volunteers. We think it has tremendous potential and will be a terrific vehicle for showcasing YOU, our amazing volunteers who are out there making a difference in schools, shelters, parks, community centers, and in the lives of your neighbors.
How can you help? They would love your input and it’s easy to add your voice to this book. There are two ways to participate; choose which works best for you:
A. Answer a few questions on a simple web site questionnaire. Click here to go directly to the questionnaire. OR
B. Contact Jayne via e-mail or phone (404-786-0150) and she will interview you over the phone. The interview only takes about 20 minutes of your time and can even be scheduled in the evenings or on weekends. If you would like to get even more involved, and become instrumental in collecting L.A. Works stories, please contact Jayne and let her know. She's looking for at least one “in-town” interviewer in each city.
Since this is a book about making a change in the world, we want the input of change-makers. In other words – you. We also want to make sure that the great work being done here in Los Angeles is well-represented. So please, take a few minutes to make this book as inspiring, creative, interesting and passionate as it can be. I know everyone is busy, but if each of you spends even ten minutes on this project, I know we'll end up with an amazing book that can inspire even more change.
Thank you and please contact Jayne with any questions, 404-786-0150 or jhallock@handsonnetwork.org
Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
The L.A. Works web site also lists ongoing volunteering opportunities for non-profit agencies that have long-term volunteer needs. These referrals are not L.A. Works managed projects but we think these opportunities may be of interest to our volunteers. The link to the list of ongoing opportunities appears at the bottom of the calendar page on the web site.
