The L.A. Works Truck Needs Your Help!

Our campaign to raise money to purchase a new truck continues. Thanks to all who contributed the first $14,230 towards the $35,000 we need to raise.

This truck will replace 'ol blue, that drove over 250,000 miles transporting thousands of gallons of paint, tools, and supplies to projects that help our city year-round.

To donate, either mail a check made out to L.A. Works to:

Deadline for Online Pre-Registration
is June 7!

Don't miss out on L.A.'s most exciting day of volunteerism!

Pre-register yourself, your team of co-workers, family and friends, and reserve a spot at one of the great project sites for L.A. Works Day 2005.

Your day will begin at California Plaza for check-in at 7:30 and breakfast. From there, you will be bussed to your nearby project site where you will join hundreds of other volunteers in 'extreme make-overs' of inner city schools, community centers and historic landmarks. Painting, planting and refurbishing will completely transform these sites in a single day. At around 12:30, at the end of your work day, you will be bussed back to California Plaza to enjoy a free lunch catered by Louise's Trattoria, an outdoor concert by leading chicano band Quetzal, and prizes and free stuff from our sponsors. Most importantly, you will bask in the glow that comes with knowing that you have given a day to L.A. and made a huge difference. It's a blast!

Frequently Asked Questions About L.A. Works Day

Q: Can I still volunteer if I haven't signed up online by the pre-registration deadline of June 7th?
A: Yes. Pre-registration helps us plan, and speeds up your check-in on the day of event. But if you missed the online pre-registration deadline, you are still welcome to attend. Just show up at California Plaza at 7:30 a.m. on June 11th. Go to registration and tell them you are not "on the list," but want to register for the day! You'll be welcomed!

Q: Is there a cost to participate?
A: Money raised on L.A. Works Day supports L.A. Works’ year-round program of over 60 free monthly volunteer projects that address our city’s most pressing social needs. For example, L.A. Works’ volunteers serve meals to the hungry, mentor at-risk youth, teach reading to kids in underserved neighborhoods, provide services to families who live with HIV/AIDS and restore the environment. L.A. Works makes it easy to volunteer in Los Angeles by organizing projects after work hours and on weekends, and by offering easy online sign-up. There is a $25 dollar registration fee (donation), and we encourage you to raise as much money as you can. If you cannot afford the $25 registration fee, call us at 323-224-6510 and ask for a waiver. We don't want you to feel you can't volunteer if you can't donate the minimum of $25.

Q: What should I bring/wear?
A: Comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, closed toe shoes, your sponsorship pledge form and money you collected, sunscreen, work gloves, and a hat.  We’ll provide you with any tools and project supplies you might need

Q: What if it rains?
A: Rain or shine, L.A. Works Day will go on!

Q: Can I volunteer with my friends or family or co-workers?

A: Yes. Go to the L.A. Works Day 2005 page online at www.laworks.com, register yourself and then follow the easy directions to add people to your own volunteer team.   Or just show up together at check-in and we’ll ensure that you are all sent to the same project.

Q: How old do I have to be to Participate?
A: L.A. Works Day allows volunteers as young as 8 years old to participate if supervised by a parent or guardian. The minimum age for volunteers without a parent or guardian is 16 if they provide a signed parental waiver (see below) at check-in.

Q: Can I choose my project location?
A: No.  Sorry, the complexities of the event make that impossible. But if you have a special interest like gardening or mural painting, we always try our best to accommodate your interests.

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities

The L.A. Works web site also lists ongoing volunteering opportunities for non-profit agencies that have long-term volunteer needs. These referrals are not L.A. Works managed projects but we think these opportunities may be of interest to our volunteers. The link to the list of ongoing opportunities appears at the bottom of the calendar page on the web site.
