NBA All-Star Painting Project
Completed

Lakers superstar Karl Malone and WNBA L.A. Sparks superstar Lisa Leslie pitched in to help paint the Cypress Park Boys and Girls Club along with the local kids. The NBA sponsored project included construction of a brand new computer and literacy center. Thanks to all the L.A. Works volunteers who joined the NBA and Home Depot in making dreams come true for these kids!

Cesar Chavez Experience Completed

The L.A. Works Cesar Chavez Experience was designed as a service learning opportunity for the 6th graders of John Burroughs Middle School. By working with school administrators, teachers, and community service partners throughout Los Angeles, L.A. Works entered three sixth grade classes and assisted the students in designing and executing service projects focused on improving their community while learning about Cesar Chavez and his commitment to his community. Through an 11-week process of meeting with community service providers, researching the projects they were creating, and lengthy class discussion, the students created presentations, projects, and instructional opportunities to address the goal of educating fellow students. The project culminated in a presentation to the student body about the projects the students had pursued. The class focusing on school vandalism spoke to school officials about the cost of removing graffiti from school grounds. The school violence class spoke to their peers about the issues that faced the students at their school and used that information to create a pledge to nonviolence that they asked their fellow students to commit to. The last class, focusing on animal cruelty, raised over $400 for their community service partner, the SPCA LA. Overall it was a wonderful project for the students, teachers, school, and L.A. Works!
