Sign up Now to be a Part of
L.A.'s Biggest Day of Volunteerism
June 11
7:30 am - 1:30 pm
Now is the time to sign-up for the year's most exciting day of volunteerism -- L.A. Works Day! On L.A. Works Day thousands of volunteers representing Los Angeles' rich cultural mosaic join together for a one day all-out community service blitz. Typically we play music with underprivileged kids, serve the homeless, create community art, paint schools, murals and Fire Stations, plant trees, clean up the environment – Dozens of community sites are transformed in a single day! This year's projects will include restoration work on the historic Angels Flight Railway, and major landscaping projects under the supervision of the UCLA School of Landscape Architecture.
The day will start at California Plaza in downtown L.A. with breakfast. You'll get your L.A. Works Day T-shirt, be bussed to one of our project sites, and make a stunning difference in our community! Then you'll be returned to California Plaza for a terrific catered lunch from Louise's Trattoria, and we'll have music and entertainment to celebrate the day!
You can sign up as an individual, or create a team of co-workers, family or friends, using our new easy Special Event sign-up procedure. Click here to sign-up today!

L.A. Works Receives
Presidential Volunteer Service Award
L.A Works was honored last week by the Union Rescue Mission, who presented us with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for demonstrating outstanding volunteer service over the last year. In a presentation during their morning chapel service, Natalie Furlett, L.A. Works’ Director of Programs, accepted the award from Warren Currie, the CEO of the Union Rescue Mission, and David Dow, Chairman of the URM board. Along with L.A. Works, a number of groups and individuals also received the award for their dedication and hard work. L.A. Works is extremely proud of this honor and the commitment of our volunteers. For over 5 years, L.A. Works volunteers have been feeding the homeless once a week at the URM kitchen. Our Project Leaders, like Luis de Avila, Jacquie Moreno, Bobbi Marin, Laura Bonilla, Suzanne Studer Iselt, Glenn McClanan, Sarah Scheening, and Michael Hicks, have made this project a great experience for URM, our volunteers, and the clients served. We would like to thank everyone who has volunteered for the Union Rescue Mission and have left such a lasting impression on their staff and clients.
Featured Project of the Month
Let's Read Spring Sessions starting soon. Let's Read is one of L.A. Works' most valuable volunteer programs. Volunteers make a weekly commitment to provide kids with the tools that will enable them to reach their dreams. We work individually and as a group with neighborhood kids to help them with school-related materials as well as to expose them to topics that they may not otherwise be familiar with. This mentoring relationship can change the lives of these kids.
Volunteers for Let's Read commit to come each Saturday morning during the Winter Term from May 21- July 30.
Click here to sign up for Pueblo Del Rio. Pueblo Del Rio's Let's Read is located in Southeast Los Angeles. (First time Let's Read volunteers should also sign-up for the Let's Read Orientation for Pueblo Del Rio on May 14th).

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
The L.A. Works web site also lists ongoing volunteering opportunities for non-profit agencies that have long-term volunteer needs. These referrals are not L.A. Works managed projects but we think these opportunities may be of interest to our volunteers. The link to the list of ongoing opportunities appears at the bottom of the calendar page on the web site. Click here to see the ongoing opportunities section of the web site.
