of the Month

Using Filters to find projects fast.

Ever wanted to find a project on our website that's in a certain part of town, or addresses a certain social issue? It's easy!

Click on Project Calendar on the left navigation bar. Then click on the top center tab, Browse Projects. You'll initially see all the agencies we have upcoming projects with.

You can then apply filters to narrow the list:

Drop down the "Filter by" menu to search for projects that address a particular social issue: Homelessness, Children & Youth, Seniors, Environment, etc.

Or, drop down the "Region" menu to search for projects by a region of the county: Downtown, West L.A., San Fernando Valley, etc.

The list will now only feature projects that meet your criteria!

L.A. Works Day 2005 is Set!

Saturday, June 11, 2005 will be L.A. Works Day 2005, Los Angeles' 13th annual day of community service.

Thanks to the work of L.A. Works Board member and Grand Performances Executive Director Michael Alexander, we'll be returning again to our central site at California Plaza courtesy of Equity Office Properties, Maguire Properties and the Omni Hotel Downtown L.A. Project sites will again be within a 15-20 minute bus ride from Grand Avenue and we will continue our focus on extreme make-over style facilities projects involving 200-500 volunteers per site.

In association with the L.A. Unified School District, and the relevant City Council offices, we are already compiling a list of possible project sites. If you know of any possible project sites please email them to us at info@laworks.com, and we'll put them on the list for consideration. Final decisions on project sites will be made in early 2005.

Sponsorships for L.A. Works Day 2005 have gotten off to a roaring start as well.  We are extremely proud to announce ICI Paints as a new Premier level sponsor. A new Elite level sponsor is the UCLA Anderson Challenge for Charity, and Deloitte has increased their sponsorship to the Patron level. All this and we have only just sent out the sponsorship solicitation materials!  If you or your company might be interested in sponsoring L.A. Works Day 2005, click here for more info. Act quickly because some sponsorship levels will fill-up fast.

As always, the success of L.A. Works Day 2005 will depend primarily on the efforts of our dedicated and skilled volunteer committees.  Whether you are a returning veteran L.A. Works Day organizer, or a new person looking to get involved, keep an eye out for notices of when and where our organizing kick-off meeting will be held.

We're looking forward to seeing you all at L.A. Works Day 2005!

October was a Big Month for BusinessWorks

During the last few weeks, L.A. Works has completed six major facility refurbishment projects involving thousands of volunteers from some of L.A.'s biggest corporations. Our consulting program, called BusinessWorks, is how we help interested corporations and other civic groups, produce their own custom-made days of community service, and is also one of the main ways we earn the money to support our calendar projects and all of our other programming.

One of the projects we did was the extreme make-over of Charnock Road Elementary School (pictured left) for 600 employees of E! Networks and G4techTV as part of Comcast Cares Day

For Deloitte Community Impact Day we organized the extreme make-overs of Trinity Street Elementary School (pictured below, right) , Plaza de la Raza Cultural Arts Center in East L.A., and Edison Elementary School in Santa Ana (pictured right) for over 1000 Deloitte volunteers.  These projects were very successful and made a huge and lasting impact on the agencies the companies transformed, and on the kids those agencies serve.

But that's not all.  Here are some of the other great companies who volunteered with L.A. Works recently:

Forest City Real Estate:  This major real estate development company, heavily involved in the renaissance of Downtown L.A., sent over 100 employee volunteers to help us prepare for the extreme make-over of Trinity Elementary School.

UCLA Anderson Challenge for Charity:  Over 100 MBA students from UCLA also spent a long day preparing Trinity for it's make-over.

Home Depot:  A part of Home Depot's 25th anniversary celebration, L.A. Works organized two major facilities renovations for their Team Depot volunteers.  One included building more classrooms and refurbishing the performing arts space at Save our Future Charter School in South L.A., and a similar facility refurbishment at the Boys & Girls Club in Whittier.

Turner Broadcasting:  L.A. Works organized a painting project for 100 Turner Broadcasting employee volunteers at L.A. Leadership Academy, a charter Middle School in the Mid-City area.

Causeway Capital:  The good people at Causeway Capital went to Shenandoah St. School in West L.A. to put finishing touches on an extreme make-over L.A. Works did there.

Katz Media:  This major L.A. media company also helped us with finishing Shenandoah.

The success of these projects shows once again that L.A. Works is the leader in community service and volunteerism for corporations and other groups in L.A.  If you would like more information on how your company can get involved please write to info@laworks.com and we'll get right back to you.

Featured Project of the Month

Five Days left to Sign up for TeamWorks

TeamWorks is a new and exciting program that seeks to explore the root causes behind some of our most challenging community issues and stimulate a sense of civic engagement. It will build on our existing volunteer programs by providing you with opportunities to deepen the experience of service and to create a sense of community among our volunteers. At the same time, you will be equipped with the tools to act collectively on the root causes of some of the most pressing social issues that face our city.

Volunteers will participate in hands-on volunteer service while learning about the community issues and creating a bond with our nonprofit partner and their fellow teammates.

TeamWorks is an eight session commitment, two times a month for four months.  We ask that if you sign up for TeamWorks, you make sure you are available for all eight sessions of the program.  Dates for this session are:

November 6th and 20th
December 4th and 18th
January 8th and 22nd
February 5th and 19th

TeamWorks is a great way to make new friends, develop leadership skills, and have fun while benefiting our community.

Click on the links below to find out more about each project:

Other Volunteer Opportunities

The following opportunities are not L.A. Works managed projects, but should be of interest to our volunteers.

Compton Volunteer Center: As the standards increase for college admission, it is important to offer as many aids as possible to our students in the community. SAT Prep courses can cost thousands of dollars!  The service as the Compton Volunteer Center is FREE! While they cannot guarantee students will score a perfect 1600, with your help as a devoted volunteer they can help educate students about the structure, expectations, and strategies related to the SAT.  If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer SAT Coach, and are available Monday-Thursday from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. please contact: (310) 605-5585 or e-mail bmims@comptoncity.org
