L.A. Works Launches New Blog

It's amazing how times change. Back in the "old days" of L.A. Works, we used to maintain a special L.A. Works hotline phone number, where people looking for projects on short notice could get the latest announcements and breaking news.

Well, people don't look for news by phone anymore. It's all about the BLOG don't you know...

During Hurricane Katrina, we had daily news we wanted to share with you, and did our best to publish it online but realized it was time to try something new:

So... L.A. Works is happy to announce we've started blogging!

L.A. Works Hotline is our new blog (you'll always find a link to it on our homepage at www.laworks.com) and there you'll find all the breaking news about volunteer opportunities at L.A. Works. Think of it as the up-to-the-minute version of this newsletter.

This is where we'll list projects that REALLY need your help, Projects that are short volunteers, brand new to the website, or just really cool and interesting.

We'll also use the Blog to keep you up to date on exciting things happening at L.A. Works, news that affects the Los Angeles community, and anything fun we want to share with you (giveaways, special promotions, film screenings, etc).

PLUS - you can share your thoughts with other volunteers. Like most Blogs, you can comment on our postings and use it to keep in touch with us and your fellow volunteers.

Have news you want to share? Email us at info@laworks.com and we'll be happy to post items that are appropriate on the blog. We'd love to see this Blog become a forum for all of Los Angeles to discuss making a difference in our community!

Visit the L.A. Works Hotline today. Bookmark it. When you log-in at laworks.com, always click on the BLOG link on the homepage to get all the latest announcements!

Holiday Volunteer Opportunities

The holiday season brings out the best in volunteers. However, because so many people want to volunteer in conjunction with the holidays, it can be difficult to find opportunities.

To make things easier for our volunteers we've created a simple search link on our home page to list L.A. Works managed project and referral opportunities for the holidays.

Click here for one-day volunteer projects and referrals on our calendar.

Click here for longer term open-ended volunteer needs by agencies preparing for the holidays.

Remember: Space in these opportunities is limited. Please do not sign up unless you are certain you're able to attend. Don't spoil the holidays of the kids who are depending on us. Always honor your commitments to volunteer! Thanks!

If you're a non-profit needing volunteers for the holidays - let us help 'hook you up.' Email Larry Deckel at larry@laworks.com if you need volunteers to support your holiday events.

How do we add new Projects to our calendar? By recruiting more Project Leaders! If you've got the desire to take the next step in volunteerism, please attend this informative, fun session on how to join the ranks of our Project Leaders. Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities

The L.A. Works web site also lists ongoing volunteering opportunities for non-profit agencies that have long-term volunteer needs. These referrals are not L.A. Works managed projects but we think these opportunities may be of interest to our volunteers. The link to the list of ongoing opportunities appears at the bottom of the calendar page on the web site. Click here to see the ongoing opportunities section of the web site.
