We're not saying that everyone should volunteer this
many times each month -- but for someone with the drive
and stamina to so, it's a great boon for our community.
And so, this month we recognize Suzanne for her outstanding
contributions to L.A. Works.
Suzanne is from Colorado Springs (yes, she loves to
ski) and has lived in LA for about 6 years. She is an
actress and a writer, and spends most of her free time
taking her nutty chocolate lab to the beach near her
house, or hiking in the hills around town. She also
loves exotic foreign travel. Her last two trips were
to Nepal, where she hiked in the Himalayas and studied
buddhism, and to Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands,
where she swam with sea lions. She also went to the
Amazon where she was amazed by the unbelievable colorings
of the parrots, and swam with Pirahnas (unbenownst
to her until she fished for them after jumping out of
the water!)

Suzanne's Views on volunteering:
"I've been volunteering for various projects
with L.A. Works for a couple of years. Since
last spring, I've been a project leader. I was
concerned at first that leading these projects
would be too time consuming, but I've found
that it doesn't really take much extra time.
And the reward is outstanding. For instance,
I know that many of the projects I lead may
not happen at all if I'm not there to take care
of them.

By far the most rewarding part of volunteering with L.A.
Works is seeing so many people from the community become
involved in improving the lives of their fellow Angelinos.
I think the impact of people helping each other bonds
us all and creates a much healthier city. You cannot possibly
spend a Tuesday night feeding the homeless, then Wednesday
morning ignore the homeless man that sleeps at the end
of your street.
The L.A. Works projects in which I've been involved include
feeding the homeless at the L.A. & Union Rescue Missions,
beauty night at the Angel Guardian women's shelter, caring
for rescued dogs at the Amanda Foundation, organizing
volunteers at two 9/11 one-year memorials, Arts &
Crafts with children at the Angel Guardian shelter, and
caring for rescued rabbits at PetSave. I was also a project
leader for the L.A. Works Day this summer, painting a
firehouse in downtown L.A.
Personally, I don't really think that volunteering is
as much a self-congratulatory act as it is a necessity
and obligation for us to improve the quality of life for
everyone. Nonetheless, I have thoroughly enjoyed every
experience I've had with LA Works, and these projects
have been unbelievably fulfilling and personally rewarding.
Thank you for supplying us with all of these great opportunities!"
