Project Leader of the Month

This month L.A. Works would like to recognize one of our newer project leaders: Kayo Shiraishi-Adachi

Over the past year, Kayo has not only been a new volunteer with L.A. Works, but also organized a 25- person team from her office (Morgan Stanley) to volunteer on L.A. Works Day. She has led or co-led numerous monthly projects with an incredibly high level of enthusiasm, and helped L.A. Works get a $10,000 grant from her employer.

All project leaders should consider the opportunities that exist in getting their companies to support and be part of L.A. Works. We salute Kayo this month for her great job leading projects and for taking the initiative by making Morgan Stanley part of L.A. Works' corporate supporters.

Kayo is from Tokyo, Japan, and has lived in LA since 1988. For the past 4 years she has worked for Morgan Stanley as an office manager, where she has a variety of responsibilities from supervising administrative staff, managing facility issues, planning office events and spearheading philanthropic efforts. In 2002 she gathered a group of Morgan Stanley employees to participate in L.A. Works Day, and she plans to organize more volunteering events for her office this year.

Kayo has been a Project Leader for 4 months, and has mainly worked on children related projects: Angel Guardian, Good Shepherd Residence, Angel’s Flight and Gramercy Place Shelter. She also led the Thanksgiving homeless feeding project for One Incredible Family.

Kayo's views on being a Project Leader
"It has only been a short time, but being a Project Leader has been a very rewarding experience for me on many levels. I was heavily involved with volunteering in high school through a club. After high school, I wanted to keep doing work in the community but wasn’t sure what to do - there are so many non-profits for great causes but I was hesitant to make a commitment to one specific organization.

L.A. Works is great in that I get to sample many wonderful organizations and the people associated with them. I had not worked with children much until I joined L.A. Works and I really didn’t know what kids at shelters would be like, but they are so great to work with. Seeing the kids’ faces light up when they are playing with the volunteers is priceless.

In addition to having the opportunity to work with many CSPs, being a Project Leader allows me to bring the gratifying experience to other volunteers. There are many people out there with golden hearts, wanting to do something but don’t have much time and/or don’t know where to go. I know exactly how they feel, and that all they need is a Project Leader making it easy for them to get started, encourage them and make them feel needed and appreciated. Sometimes it’s the volunteers having a greater time than the kids! I love it that I’m empowering the volunteers and bringing out the best in them. I’m looking forward to sampling more CSPs, meeting more kindhearted people and welcoming the newcomers to L.A. Works."
