Project Leader of the Month

Viet Hoang
L.A. Works continues to grow and prosper as volunteers choose to take on added responsibility. Viet Hoang is a great example of an L.A. Works volunteer who continues to "step-up" his involvement each month. Starting out as a volunteer, he quickly became a Project Leader, has maintained a long-term relationship with the Center for Non-Violent Education and Parenting (CNVEP), served on various committees, and now also leads many of our Volunteer Orientations.

We asked Viet to tell us a bit about himself, and his involvement with L.A. Works.

Viet Hoang

"My name is Viet Hoang and I live Long Beach, work in Torrance, and play
in LA.

I have been involved with L.A. Works since September 2001. In that time, I have led a variety of projects, including Project Angel Food, Achilles Track Club, LA Regional FoodBank, and CNVEP Day of Dialogue. Of all the projects in which I have been involved, the Day of Dialogue strikes me as being "most meaningful" in my life. CNVEP helps the community understand the importance of non-violent parenting. During Day of Dialogue, volunteers spend quality time with children, while the children's parents hear messages reinforcing the importance of non-violent parenting. I believe that families who hear and live this message resemble a tiny pebble tossed into water -- rippling the message of non-violence throughout the community.

In addition to leading projects, I also lead Volunteer Orientations. The Orientations are an excellent opportunity for volunteers to find out about L.A. Works, and to make a direct "human" connection, even before participating in a project. Studies repeatedly show that if employees, volunteers, or students feel "engaged" with their organization, the level of participation and retention tend to be greater. The Orientations are also an excellent opportunity for volunteers to find out about other ways in which they can contribute -- L.A. Works Day, financial support, in-kind contributions, corporate sponsorship, etc.

One "tip" I would like to share with other Project Leaders is to always be on the lookout for volunteers who are interested in doing more. It seems like in every project in which I have participated, there are a few volunteers who are interested in increasing their involvement. All it takes is a little information, a little direction, and a lot of encouragement, and before you know it, L.A. Works has a new Project Leader!

In the L.A. Works office, we all admire Viet's devotion, hard-work, and easy-going flexibility. Thanks Viet, for all you continue to do for the organization and its volunteers.
