Project Leader of the Month

Luis De Avila

This month we recognize one of our most active new Project Leaders - Luis De Avila. Since moving back to Los Angeles from the Central Coast a year ago, Luis has dug into volunteerism with both hands! He regularly leads projects at the Union Rescue Mission, the Burbank Center for the Retarded, and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

He nurtured his passion for volunteerism while in Santa Barbara where he helped out at a food and clothing distribution center and volunteered for Amnesty International.

Here in Los Angeles he works as a Support Engineer for an integration software company in Monrovia, and yet still manages to find time to lead as many as four volunteer projects through L.A. Works each month!

We asked Luis why he's been so generous with his time, as a leader of so many projects:

"I think we all want to live well and be happy. For some people living is a difficult endeavor because they worry about where they're going to sleep or where their next meal will come from. If we eliminate those obstacles, then it's easier for people to learn a new skill, work on their drug addiction, become better people, and be on a path towards finding their passion and living well. "

"There was a need for someone to head these projects and since they are important to me I decided to lead them. Also, there are always volunteers willing to give their time and energy and I felt it would be a shame to have to cancel those projects because we couldn't find someone to lead them. Mahatma Gandhi once said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." That makes perfect sense to me so I act."

Thanks Luis for your continued commitment to action in our community!
