Project Leader of the Month

Jose Valencia
Our "Let's Read" project leaders hold a special place in our heart -- as the "Let's Read" program requires an ongoing committment to lead a project for 8-12 consecutive Saturdays. In April of 2003 we recognized David Trilling, who leads the "Let's Read" program at Pueblo Del Rio. This month we'd like to thank the man who's taken the reins of the Mar Vista "Let's Read" program - Jose Valencia.

Jose has taken a big leap and is reinvigorating this important program that mentors at-risk youth while providing a meaningful relationship between the kids and volunteers.

We asked Jose to tell us a bit about himself and how he came to lead this lynchpin L.A. Works Project!

"I am 28, born and raised in the beautiful city of Guadalajara in Mexico. I moved to Los Angeles at the age of 14. I went to Cal State Los Angeles, where I received a Bachelor's degree in Information Systems. While a student at CSLA, I held several network management jobs. My last job before graduation, which I still hold today, was with UCLA as a network administrator.

I am a problem solver. I like to play around with new gizmos, I read the entire manual before I use any new toys, I enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together. I am an adventurer, always looking for new and exciting places to visit and people to know. I am an amateur photographer, searching for the close-to-perfect shot. I love driving on the open highway with the sun and wind in my face, and I am currently learning to play the piano.

Let's Read II opened its arms to me in June this year. A goodfriend and co-worker invited me to tutor the children of the Mar Vista Gardens for two hours on Saturdays. I penciled-in the meetings in my calendar and looked forward to each meeting. During the second month, the leader of that project advertised the opening of the position that she had held for some time. I didn't think twice. I told her I wanted it. Soon afterwards, I became the project leader for Let's Read II at the Mar Vista Gardens.

I had never led any projects in my life. I had gone through enough trouble keeping myself together while in school. All I knew was that there was something special about the project and I just couldn't let the chance go by. Perhaps it was the wonderful group of children that I helped, or maybe the project's volunteers' amazing dedication to help others, or maybe it was Mar Vista Gardens' enormous commitment to these kids that inspired me to lead the project.

All I know now is that I have made this project my personal commitment. I want to watch it grow, I want to help these kids read better and see them learn and smile, one learning-hour at a time, one kid's smile at a time, and one volunteer's sense of accomplishment at a time.

As a result of my involvement with LA Works, Let's Read's children, volunteers, and community, I have come to appreciate the value of giving to others. I have met many wonderful people who share my same desire to help others. It has given me something to be proud of and something special to take with me wherever I go. As an adventurer, I search for things or places that fill my heart with joy, things that inspire me and bring me awe. The sky is the limit and the opportunities are vast. Give to others while you can, just because you can."
