Project
Leader of the Month
| Dustin Manhart
likes variety. And his history of leading such a broad
range of projects shows the diversity of communities
in need of services. He's worked with seniors, children,
the infirm and the disabled. In just a short while,
he's popped up leading projects all over our calendar.
In the last few months he's led projects at:
- Burbank Center for the Disabled
- Alexandria House
- Aviva Center
- Echo Park SNF
- Alexandria Care Center
- The Center for Non-Violent Parenting
Dustin's range of interests, and his interest in working
with so many types of clients and volunteers is exactly
the spirit we look for in a good leader.
Here's a brief rundown on this busy and dedicated volunteer:

Dustin Manhart
|
Age:
24
Occupation: Member Services Representative,
Scan Health Plan
From: Nebraska (moved to CA in January
'03)
College: U. of Nebraska
Previous Community Service Committment:
AmeriCorps* NCCC Program (2002)
Involved with LA Works since January 2003, Dustin quickly
trained as a project leader in February 2003 and has
dug into it with gusto.
We asked Dustin why he volunteers:
"I volunteer because I enjoy helping people
and because it gives me the opportunity to learn about
the people I am helping. Living in the Los Angeles area
provides me with the opportunity to observe many different
cultures. Volunteering is a great way to not only help
people, but to learn about them as well. L.A. Works
is involved with so many different communities, meaning
it is perfect for what I want in regards to volunteering.
I help people and in return I learn about them, it couldn't
be better!
My philosophy on volunteering is to get out there and
do it. It does not matter why you volunteer; the fact
that you are doing it is all that counts. Do it because
you want to help, because you want to meet people, because
its an excuse to be with friends, because you have nothing
else better to do, whatever, the fact that you are helping
is what matters. The only tip I have for volunteering
is to have fun and enjoy it."
